Following a 25 year period of closure and a £7m refurbishment, the former Tay Hotel, Dundee was scheduled to reopen as Malmaison Hotel on 1 December 2013.
Disaster struck when a pipe burst on the sixth floor on 30 November 2013 affecting a large number of suites together with the Brassiere, Restaurant and Reception areas. It was not possible to open as scheduled and all festive bookings required to be cancelled. Total Reinstatement Services were requested by the Project Management Team on 18 December to assess the damage and worked tirelessly throughout the festive holiday period to strip and dry the saturated fabric of the building.
Reinstatement of the ‘public’ areas commenced on 06 January 2014 and opening of the hotel was achieved after three and a half weeks to the delight of all concerned. Completion and full refurnishing of the suites took a further six weeks to achieve with full handover of all areas being met on programme and within budget.
Malmaison Hotel forms an integral part of the ongoing £1bn redevelopment of Dundee Waterfront and such as the importance of its eagerly anticipated arrival that the burst pipe incident and subsequent reinstatement works were the focus of much local and national media attention. Total Reinstatement Services Ltd are proud to have been of service to the Hotel Operators and wish them all future success in what has already proven to be Dundee’s premier hotel attraction.
